Early in April 2018, Mr. Jan Kropacek, sales manager at FERMAT, visited Tovarna kovinske opreme d.o.o. (TKO), which manufactures components for heavy equipment in the Slovenian town of Murska Sobota.
On top of being the capital of the short-lived Republic of Prekmurje in 1919, the municipality boasts an elegant regional museum in a chateaux (that Mr. Kropacek thoroughly enjoyed, see his postcard below)
and the machining excellence of TKO, which owns two FERMAT horizontal boring mills, a WRF 160 and a brand new WFT 15 R with KUKA robot tool changer and pick-up station specially-built right inside its large CNC rotary table. The ingenious device sits snugly within the large 2.5 x 5-meter table capable of holding up to 40 metric tons.
FERMAT’s WFT 15 R is a large table-type horizontal boring mill with a spindle diameter of 150 mm, spindle travel of 730 mm, and ram stroke of 700 mm. The Y axis on this machine is a whopping 4 meters, allowing it to mill and machine over a large area—and, importantly, reach down low to the pick-up station for the automatic milling head exchange. A video of the process, plus tidbits on the KUKA robotic tool changer (gleaned from material compiled by Mr. Kropacek, himself) is shown here.
The solution of building the pick-up station directly into the table frees up space on the factory floor where it can be better utilized for heavy-duty, profit-making milling and machining.
