WRF 160 Heavy at preacceptance in Brno with view of another column in the works

Recently, Nordmark swung by FERMAT’s manufacturing facilities in Brno, Czech Republic, for pre-acceptance of its 6th WRF 160 Heavy.  Like all of FERMAT’s gigantic WRF 160 Heavy floor-type horizontal boring mills, its headstock is built between two columns for maximum stability.  The powerful headstock, which has a spindle extension of 1 meter and a ram stroke of 1.6 meters, rides swiftly and smoothly along a Y axis of 8 meters on 4 extremely precise rack-and-pinion linear actuators.  Adding extra comfort for Nordmark’s hardworking, metal-chewing CNC machinists, FERMAT threw in a fantastic air conditioning system in the operator’s cabin.

This titan floor-type horizontal boring mill is destined for Nordmark’s machining operations at the Offshore Base Port and Maritime Industry Park in Cuxhaven, Germany.  This tall-and-handsome WRF 160 Heavy will join the ranks of three other stylish, well-built hunks of the machine-tool world, FERMAT’s WRF 160 Heavies earmarked to process steel and metal parts for wind turbines as part of Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy wind farms and beach-side resort on the North Sea.

Lower Saxony’s best-kept secret, Cuxhaven.

To get a better idea of the sheer volume of this industrial undertaking in Cuxhaven, the extraordinary economic muscle and major-league investment committed to this offshore wind power project, review the information published by the Niedersachsen Ministry of Economic Affairs.

According to its website:

The German Offshore Industry Centre at Cuxhaven offers ideal conditions for the development and construction of offshore wind turbines and as a base for the erection and operation of offshore wind farms with all the necessary services. Sites have direct access to a navigable channel, while two offshore terminals with jack-up facilities, heavy load bearing roads and a heavy lifting platform are ready to transfer offshore turbines and components to ships. The central location is excellently situated for erecting and maintaining offshore wind farms in the North Sea.

Cuxhaven in facts and figures

The numbers are staggering and the payoff is tremendous.  Moreover, megawatts of green-energy and grand fortunes will be created through harnessing the wind; a keen strategy which brought both treasure and fame (or infamy) to earlier, more violent, entrepreneurs on ‘the whale road.’
